Climbing Updates: Maple

I haven’t written any climbing updates for a while because I have been waiting for some pictures from a Maple trip two weeks ago. Yep, if you are reading this KNB, I am still waiting for the cd. =)

Last year I tried to travel every weekend to a new climbing destination as there are at least a dozen climbing spots within a five hour drive of Salt Lake. However, the continual traveling became tiring and I missed being refreshed for work on Monday morning. This year I have decided to tone it down a bit and travel every other weekend. So two weeks ago the crew headed down to Maple Canyon.

Ry is getting back into climbing this season. Yay!

I am not a huge fan of Maple for weekend trips because it is a 2 hour drive away (meaning that it could easily be a day destination), the climbs are all essentially the same and many SLC’ers head there every weekend. I prefer the more secluded scenic crags; yet, for the one-footed climber Maple is a prime location with its conglomerate rock and steep climbs.

Ms. Pear, one of our rope guns on the trip.

The crew (this time being KNB, Shaft, Ry, Ms. Pear, Toots and I) all headed down on Friday evening and hit up the Minimum, Zen Garden and Black Box Small (I think it is called) within the weekend. The highlights included Ms. Pear blazing up Groundworks at the Minimum, getting Shaft out on a rope and me attempting a boot-hand match.

KNB setting up a rope with Shaft as a belayer.

My attempt at a boot-hand match. The ankle was too sore to make it actually work.

Hey WasatchGirl. Love the site. I also think your insane :) It's all a mental issue I'm sure. I've jumped out of helicopters, planes and done all kinds of weird stuff in the Marines, but climbing a rock wall makes me just want to run and hide!

I read a few posts back about Sugar House falling victim to big business and losing the quaint community feeling that attracts its residence. I too am sorry to see that fade away.

I sold a house of a friend who lived just 1 block north of the park, he had this gigantic rock wall in his garage, at the time I thought it was the oddest thing. But I learned of his passion and related it to a skateboarder having a half pipe in the backyard.

Anyway, I'm just rambling. I also thank you for pointing me to the soon to be demolished art exhibit in Salt Lake.
