TOMS Shoes – Perfect for Climbers!

I’ve noticed that the Sanuk sandals have gained quite the traction amongst climbers, most likely due to professional athlete promotion. Yet, a great comparable shoe with a social impact is TOMS shoes.  TOMS are also slip-ons (perfect for after a boulder problem or route), pricing is similar, but mostly for every pair of TOMS purchased, a child in need receives a pair of shoes. That is right… one for one.

TOMS didn’t carry my size (size 5) until recently.  But today I purchased my first pair in support of helping them reach their goal of giving out 30,000 pairs of shoes in 30 days.  To date, TOMS has given out 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in Argentina and 50,000 pairs in South Africa.  The 2008 goal is 200,000 pairs distributed across the globe.  Why NOT join the cause?

These shoes (not "Tom's" though) are $3 in Argentina. The are common gaucho shoes and it's completely ridiculous they cost as much as they do, even considering the donation. Save your money...go to Argentina instead.
  • "Duh",
Thanks for stopping by the blog. However, the point of the shoes isn't the cost. If one wanted cheap shoes they could easily go to Walmart or Payless. The whole concept is people spend this amount on other shoes, why not put it into a product with a social cause?
    Thanks for your thoughts.

  • What a cool idea! Yes, 'duh' they're a bargain in Argentina, and yes, they're probably a bargain in Thailand (where I am now), but if you're not there, this is a pretty simple way to do something even slightly charitable!
  • I agree, Neal. Especially with the comparable shoe of the Sanuk being so popular with climbers... I would think it would make sense to perhaps check out these shoes as an alternative.
  • I think someone also told me something about a "FEED" or "FOOD" bag that they do, where they donate food to a child's family as well...did you see that Rach, or am I thinking of another company? Anyways, awesome idea, I think it's an awesome, socially responsible company.
  • Lil' Chicka,
They do make the Feed bag! It is a real cool concept where "Each FEED bag sold will provide a school year of meals for one child in need and give them the hope of an education and a regular meal." The bags can be purchased here: http://tomsshoes.com/ProductDetails.aspx?Catego...
Thanks for reminding me of the bags!
    Hope you are well.
    Best.
